Many people only think of Musher's Secret as a winter paw protector but did you know it can be used in the summer too?

Originally developed in Canada for use with sledding dogs, this 100% natural wax forms a breathable bond with your dog's paws which is protective in extreme conditions and temperatures all year long.

Musher's Secret is made from a blend of several food-grade, organic waxes, then refined to create a special formula which is a safe and non-toxic way to protect your dog's paws. It is easy to apply and will not stain carpeting or furniture.

So when the weather turns warmer, don't forget the Musher's Secret. It will help to protect your best friend's paws from hot abrasive pavement, sand and rough off-road terrain (e.g., dog park and hiking trails).

Available at Scalawags in Kennebunkport
and at www.ScalawagsOnline.com.

It's hard to believe Planet Dog's Orbee-Tuff Orbee Ball has been around for 10 years already. This tried and true favorite is modeled after Mother Earth and has been dubbed by many as the best dog ball on the planet.

What makes Orbee Balls so great? To start with, they are doggie-durable, buoyant, minty, recyclable, and made in the USA. As if that wasn't enough, Orbee Balls are 100% guaranteed!

To celebrate this major milestone, Planet Dog is offering this award-winning ball in a limited-edition run of colors -- Red/Teal, Silver/Pink and Glass/Lake (one of the original color combos) -- and Scalawags has got 'em (while supplies last).

Every dog needs a new ball each spring so treat yours to one of the best! Available at Scalawags in Kennebunkport and in our web shop. Now get out there and romp yourselves silly! It's spring!

Most people know there are many health benefits to eating seaweed but did you know seaweed is a rich source of micro-nutrients, amino acids and trace elements with health benefits for dogs and cats too?

During our recent trade show adventure, we met Kelly Roth, the owner of VitaminSea Seaweed, a small family-owned Maine company specializing in seaweed products for pets.

Kelly passionately explained how they work year round to harvest all of their own seaweed from live ocean plants from the cold, pristine waters off the rocky Maine coastline (versus seaweed that has washed up on the shore). The seaweed is then sun dried to keep all its nutrients at the highest levels.

Some of the benefits of including VitaminSea Seaweed in your pet's diet may include:

  • Healthier skin and coat
  • Higher resistance to infections
  • Better digestion
  • Fewer parasites
  • Reduces stress
  • Calmer temperaments
  • Increases stamina
  • Reduces allergy symptoms
  • Better reproductive performance
  • Better growth rate

Visit Scalawags' Treats & Chews Department to find out more about these naturally nutritious VitaminSea Pet products. Available in our Kennebunkport shop too!

Looking for a cool, beachy leash for spring? Check out our new Fishing Rope Dog Leashes hand-crafted in Maine from recycled fishing rope.

We were very excited to find these environmentally-friendly dog leashes hiding among the popular welcome mats made from the same material at the New England Products Trade Show this past weekend.

What makes these dog leashes extra cool is they are helping an endangered species, the Northern Right Whale. One of the reasons the whales are endangered is because they get entangled in the floating ground rope used by lobstermen.

The good news is Maine lobstermen are turning in their floating lines for sinking ground lines. The floating lines are then recycled to make functional products like welcome mats and now, (lucky us) dog leashes!

Available in our Kennebunkport shop and web shop.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have your own wine? Well, just ask Scalawags' customer, Posh, a loveable Westie. He was recently bestowed this honor by Three Fox Vineyards in Virginia. Posh is featured on the new release of the Vineyards' Sirius wine, a proprietary blend of Barbera and Chambourcin.

To celebrate the new release, Posh (aka dog star) made a personal appearance at the Vineyard, arriving ever so stylishly in a red Jaguar convertible. His "fans" got to have their picture taken with him and get a pawtograph on their bottle of Sirius.

Posh celebrated his fifth birthday at the Vineyard too with a festive party for all of his friends!

For more information about Sirius and Three Fox Vineyards, visit their website or to see more pictures of Posh, visit the Vineyard's Facebook page.

And to think we new him when...
